Different storylines come together to one central plot core. The descriptions of racism, tribal belonging and Nigerian politics given through the dinners by Obdenigu are very impressive. The simplicity of life for villagers like Ogwu is striking in contrast. The role of the woman is also brought in by presenting two opposite sisters. The coup and its consequences are presented in a comprehensible way.
