This is interesting to read after having read A Song to Drown Rivers not too long ago. They have a very similar synopsis, and the first chapters set up our main characters in similar circumstances: poor village, famine, dead sibling, sacrificing self to empire for sake of family. I think the style of writing for this book is a bit more my speed. There’s also magic, which I didn’t expect, so that’ll be dif.
