Two things:
1) Baru is in bondage and being questioned both in the numbered chapters and in "Now" - nice parallell
2) The stories of ash continue in this book and I think they form a parallel to the later chapters of inciting civil war - stories of catastrophes, one where Falcrest failed, one where it might succeed
And as a third, I think the parallel to the note at the beginning with the Portuguese invasion

The chapter isn't quite done, but "Splinters" :
Baru is being questioned while stuck in a confined space and water slowly poured over her. This featured a phrase like "the dog of claustrophobia liked the back of her knees" or something like that and that was just insanely good.
Also "uranium lore" for those cancer worshippers

Back to my favorite series I can recommend to nobody, because it's too complicated. But this time around I will try to take notes.
So in the prologue "Now" we get the central 'point' of this one:
Starting a civil war between the followers of Trim and the Cancreoth. Thus weakening the Oriate Mbo (am I spelling any of these correctly?).
Nice an straight forward for once; it won't stay like that, will it?
