almost every other character seems to me to have dimensions and depth EXCEPT for the main character. But maybe it is still too early - not even a hundred pages in, mind you - to banish Chichikov to the corner.

So when it comes to "our hero" there is an antithesis; whatever the narrator says ("...his thoughts were not so rash and....well-grounded...") comes in contrast with what the hero says/does/thinks. At least, in this case.
