Kinda drags a bit here with all of Liu Song’s backstory. I think what lost me here was that it’s all about reputation, appearances, and being Chinese which is less affecting to me as it’s a bit simplistic and shallow. Also the antagonists being vile is a bit boring.

But like Charlotte and her suicide was one of the moments that work because of her relationship with William.

It’s well written but it’s kinda trauma porn for Liu Song so it feels a bit over the top—very dramatized. But otherwise it’s fine. More setting u the story and whatnot

A stellar opening in terms of writing. Charlotte is too sweet and nice it’s unrealistic that she’s so perfect but—oh no—she’s blind! It is very engineered to appeal to human tenderness which can feel a bit cheap.

And the depression era descriptions were good for creating the desperate setting for them to rough it out through, but otherwise took space from character moments I think.
