Silence would overtake him, & he'd become denatured, attuning himself only to the elements-registering his existence by his hindrance to the wind & submitting himself to the clarifying gestures of the sea, for, while the sea was neither just nor fair, while it was indifferent to the desires of men,it operated wholly without subterfuge or betrayal or false hope.It might aid in your demise but would make no profit by it.

Smell the night flower,
observe the beetle's wing.
Are the greatest gifts
before you, unreceived?

At some point in every voyage, the familiar water around you becomes unfamiliar. But only by sailing onward did the unknown seas join the ranks of the known.

Salted light fell through the grove. He'd heard there used to be a variety of pigeons that roosted here.He wondered what it'd sounded like..He'd never really thought about it before, what remains after something disappears. But now it was all he could think about, the look in someone's eyes, the way water circled their faces, & then, once they were underwater, replaced their faces with yours, reflected on the surface.

Finau & his father took their ink in the royal gardens..The son & the father lay on their stomachs, on either side of the Tufuga so he could shift between his subjects, inking one while the pain subsided on the other...
Finau: The first strike drew a veil upon his sight. There was only dark, with needles letting in the faintest light. And then the tapping drew the focus of his mind, a regularity, a rhythm

"The navigator has no need of talk.Poetry doesn't even exist out here.Light, sky, current, sun, all come speechless.Stars extinguish themselves one by one as they touch the horizon. That's the definition of silence."

Kōki said,"Silence is the answer to the last parrot's call."
New Punake said,"Silent is the voice that once kept you up all night."
"Silence,"said Mateaki,"is the thing that carries your mother away."

How had [Poet] New Punake come to find himself so close to conflict? At the tide line: littered bodies, an unfolding battle between man and dog. He'd never even touched a dog. Look at the dead, haphazard in the sand! And the chaotic shrieks of seabirds! Poems flowed naturally, they moved sensibly through their topic--you could trust in poetry's guiding hand...But life! What was this stuff called life?

Kōki was a formidable parrot, with a grand wingspan&crimson nape.He let loose a series of squawks&screeches."Kōki learning parrot talk," Kōki declared.
"Do all parrots speak the same language?"I asked.
Almost wistfully,Kōki said,"Kōki not know.Kōki not meet other parrots."
"What happened to them?"
"People happened!"Kōki said.
"Kōki see you teach your parrot human talk.Good luck!Rural parrot not sophisticate."

Morning light spear-tipped the sea, bluing the peaks of the waves, while the ocean below remained dark. Along eastern Tongatapu, open-ocean rollers pressed shoulder-to-stern against a lone Fisian vaka [war canoe]. The wind, in conspiracy, stacked the waves, topknotting them white with curls of froth that trailed down their faces.

Night Songs:
Pōhiva's name was formed from original terms. Moana was the first word. "Ocean." La'ā and māhina followed, the "sun" and "moon," which separated 'aho from pō, "day" from "night." Next came tangata and fefine, "man" and "woman." 'Ofa, "love," naturally followed. This gave reason for me'e, "dance," and for hiva, "song."

Lolohea, eyes red from the sea, nodded. He turned and dove again. The truth was Lolohea had felt better since the royal necklace was lifted from his neck. And the ocean was where he felt most apart from the world. Underwater, away from everything, even in the dark, was a place lacking wholly in pressures, duties, and scrutiny. He could spend an eternity there.
