The first half was a bit hard for me to get through because of my expectations that there would be more about the murder that happened but slowly and steadily the book became a beautiful read. Elizabeth Strout just knows how to describe people even if there is’t a proper point to the book you just don’t forget her words

I love the melting of worlds in her usual writing and I was disappointed by Lucy and Olive’s encounters. I was really excited at first but it felt annoyingly personal when Olive downplayed Lucy’s childhood saying everyone dealt with poverty..

I still think Strout is an amazing writer and it’s not that the characters are older that made me enjoy this book far lees than her others- but that the descriptions didn’t flow effortlessly. Sometimes it felt like things were added for shock factor like the line “he dressed in woman’s clothes” … unfortunately my least favourite of her books. It not just about older people, it’s written ‘old’
