oh my god this book. At one point the expedition leader (a man who made his name riding a bicycle around the outback, which is apparently something people did in the early 20th century) literally breaks up a screaming match by separating the two arguing parties and quietly confiding in each that the other guy is mentally unstable and it's better just to nod along and smile. Did I mention Australian history is NUTS?
