I first read Ulysses 33 years ago. I was backpacking across Asia and spent two amazing months in Indonesia. I picked the book up at one of the many book swapping shops on the trail. This time round I picked the book up in Oxfam on Marylebone High Street. I am further through it than the previous owner who left a 2013 receipt marking the place of defeat in the book - ironically in the land of the lotus eaters.
