The ending is quite satisfying. Of the calm Japan books this one is one of the best. There is a sense of rightness when things are called by their proper name again as yui is when she is called mama. I kept wondering what revelation would change her character the most. I only think takesshi isn’t quite fleshed out

I find yui, Takeshi, and Hana’s relationship the central heart of the story. I was afraid that yui’s radio job would be important but it’s not. When Hana compares herself to yui’s daughter and wonders if she can be loved if she’s not as pretty it seems a childish yet valid concern

Reading this on the bus. It’s better than I thought, especially the interludes. The value of a hug. A list of things yui bought for her daughter but never gave. I’m rooting for her to go in and talk to her daughter and mom on the phone. At first I thought another mopey Japanese tsunami book, but it had just enough momentum to keep me going.
