I read the first Earthsea novel very young, and really struggled with it, but loved a book called The Lost Years of Merlin and now as an adult I think that Lost Years of Merlin was maybe perhaps like very, very much ripping off Earthsea but adding some violence and romance

Most of what I remember from this book was finding it confusing and feeling like things were going over my head, but I did like Ged’s relationship with his school rival Jasper. In this read-through, I was also immediately taken with that rivalry, and it feels like encountering my younger self in a hall of mirrors and locking eyes for just a moment. Everything has changed, but some things stay the same.
