#131: Have you ever won a book giveaway?
Me: here on Goodreads? Never, and I've entered 9 giveaways only for Jan-Feb (& will apply to more in the months to come). Elsewhere? No, neither, but that's my own fault as I don't apply to those elsewhere (and I don't want to be creating an account on every single social platform just to apply to only-once giveaways).
I'm not a lucky reader, I guess.

I applied to some giveaways when I first joined in 2013, but I never won anything, so I stopped. Honestly, I get enough ARCs to read through NetGalley.
I think I've won like 5 in my Goodreads' history. I only enter giveaways for print books. ARC e-books and I are not friends. I always seem to get the ones that are formatted weird and impossible to read.

I do wish I could own a nice physical copy of some of the books I'm eyeing, though... My luck just doesn't cooperate.

Well if it's five over the course of 12 years does that make it less fortunate?

Gretchen wrote: "Well if it's five over the course of 12 years does that make it less fortunate?"Not at all! I've been here for 15 years and haven't won any yet.

Not sure, started entering in 2014 I think (first win was The Son by Jo Nesbo)... never really counted.. did win alt though.
I’ve entered a few but none have come my way. Unless you count the 3rd grade book I won for writing the best story. ✌️
I won seven from 2016 to 2022, but none since. I stopped entering as often, partly because once a year didn't seem worth the effort and partly because I have much better luck with the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. Through LT, I received 18 books just last year. You can enter as many giveaways as you want, but they limit how many books you can win per month (starting at one I think). As you receive books and complete reviews for them and build your stats you can earn yourself more weight in their algorithm and increase your eligibility slots. I am allowed to receive up to four books per month right now (though the most I have won at one time is three).
On the downside, they don't get a lot of high profile books.
Never. I'm in the US... I have been on here since 2009 and I have entered countless book giveaways over the years.. I finally stopped entering them altogether about 3 yrs ago.. With the exception of one weak moment, in early 2025.. You guessed it! I didn't win...The thing that ticks me off about them, besides not EVER winning, is that they have the audacity to add in your loser email, that the book is still available to purchase! I'm like Yeah a&&holes I know! If I wanted to buy the book I would not have entered the giveaway! Just say I didn't win the giveaway and leave it at that.

Uh! I never got one of those emails. o.O
I only enter the giveaways for the books I can't request an ARC for somewhere else, and when I'm rejected for an ARC of it. Other times, I go to the 'Galley or just wait for pub day.
Fátima wrote: "Unfortunately, the GR giveaways are only for North American and Canadian readers."Yeah, that's very limiting. :(
Do you enter giveaways elsewhere, though? On socials and websites or the author's places. They do many of them elsewhere I'm a bit jelly of. :)

I've tried the booker bundles, but it's a long shot for me to win them. There's instagram accounts in my country that made them, but I'm too lazy to be following the account, the publisher's account and god knows what more.
...Of course, I only enter giveaways for books that nobody else wants to read, i.e. my normal reading habits.
I can't remember ever entering a book giveaway. I did get a couple of prize books when I was in school (Tale of Two Cities and Antonia Fraser's King James), both of which vanished during the Wanderjahre.
Wow, ok I didn't realize I was that lucky but I won around 30 between 2020 and 2024. I think ebooks are easier to win, but I have a Kobo and the kindle format is a pain, so I stopped applying to non-physical giveaways after the first 7 or so of those. Now, tbf, I entered a lot of them back then, that was my way of discovering new books I would not have otherwise seeked out, so not sure what the win ratio was, probably not that good ^^
I did apply for a few giveaways when I first joined, but didn't bother after that. I also did win a book once around that time, but I honestly don't remember if it was from here or elsewhere.
I won one giveaway. Then they all seemed to be limited to Americans so I haven’t checked giveaways for a long time.
I have only tried on GR. I also only enter giveaways with physical copies, so maybe that is why I have never won one.
Not on GR! Many of them aren't available to me either because of where I live. :'-( But I've won a couple through blogger giveaways (such as the one you hosted on your blog! ;-) )
I couldn't even enter if I wanted to :)I did win a phone once. Well, I've also received a lot of mails over the years about me winning the lottery in countries that I've never even visited. They required me to send some money first, and when I told them they could just take it out of the money I'd won, they didn't reply back.
I don't sign up for the giveaways but I received 1 free ARC by the author. He was giving away a certain num. of books to get his started?
Anyway I liked it - vikings and bard The Skald.
Does this count?
On Goodreads I’ve never tried, in my bookish life I’ve won…one, lol. 😂 But I love the book so I’m glad that’s the one I won!

Do they let you build your rep from what you already have, or do you have to start from scratch?

Fátima wrote: "There's instagram accounts in my country that made them, but I'm too lazy to be following the account, the publisher's account and god knows what more."Hahaha! Same, though sometimes I have wished I had entered.

Left Coast Justin wrote: "...Of course, I only enter giveaways for books that nobody else wants to read, i.e. my normal reading habits."So that's your strategy! You enter the milk cow books and win all of them? 😂
But seriously, maybe it's that I've entered very requested giveaways that might have something to do with my bad luck. I don't tend to enter for the popular books/bestsellers, but those tend to overlap with my usual reads when big name authors encroach on my niche subgenres.

They all seem to be for YA and popular genres these days, which I know you don't read.

Speaking of, do the Franco-Belgian BD crowd even host giveaways? I can't recall any of the BD publishers hosting any ever.

The opposite of me. 😂 I didn't bother with giveaways when I first joined, and now I do whenever I see one for a book I want.
