Okay…. Two theories….
1) she wins the trials and proves she’s “good” and she’s not free or returned to the living - she replaces him as ruler and he is free. This would mean he is a scheming liar and a huge asshole but possible….
2) he’s hoping she’ll pass the test, prove she’s “good” and that she’ll choose to stay and rule by his side as queen - 2 powers better than one holding the gate!
