Unusual blend of spiritualism-type horror, social commentary, and police murder mystery. I hated Veronica—she was arrogant and dismissive. I liked Cole and M (the boy) but they suffered continuously. The community is bleak, full of cold, dark cruelty, and desperate hopelessness from poverty and inter-generational trauma. It left a mark. Feels incomplete. Book 2 will happen, I bet.
