Conner and Alex have figured out that their mom made a new boyfriend(their dad died before). According to pg. 36, it says '"what about dad? "Alex said. And Alex and Conner kept wanted to know about mom thinking about dad which I started to think that Conner and Alex doesn't really like that mom had made a new boyfriend.
