Sandro leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips. Her heart filled. Despite the chaos and devastation around her, for once she didn’t feel adrift and lost. She felt safe, with Sandro. “Merry Christmas, Sandro.” “Merry Christmas to you, too, my beautiful Serena.”

“We can’t do this.” If she made love with Sandro—if she had sex with Sandro—it would change everything. Even if this was supposed to be a casual fling, it would forge a bond of deep intimacy between them and the experience would stay with her for life.

This long narrative about the dog is getting boring and killing the momentum of the story.

“Do things ever go wrong for you, or do you just jet around jumping off mountains, wearing a coronet?” He drew in a breath. “That assumption is my biggest hurdle in life. People assume I live to entertain myself and never experience defeat or disappointment or yearning.”

“Breaking up with your fiancé is bad enough, but when you’re always telling people how to live their life, including how to handle relationships, it’s hard to admit you failed.”
“Who says you failed? If it didn’t work out, he was wrong for you.”

“I have fallen into your life, and I intend to save you from yourself.”
“I don’t need saving, thanks.”
“Because you already figured everything out & wrote a book about it?”
“Pretty much.” Strange feelings built in her chest. A mix of hurt and anger and humor at her own ridiculous predicament.

“Go to a hotel.” Her big dark eyes gleamed with determination. Which sparked a flare of heat in his gut. He liked a woman with fire. And the way she’d attacked him suggested that she had more than a few sparks. “There aren’t any. And who wants to stay in a hotel over Christmas?”

She’d rented this big beach house to get away from everyone and lick her wounds in private. Suddenly, being all alone in the middle of nowhere didn’t seem like such a brilliant idea. Groping around, she realized she’d fallen asleep on the living room sofa and dropped her ereader on the floor.
