A few years ago, one of my students was assigned to research and portray Robert Smalls for the 5th grade’s Black History Month Living Wax Museum.
Despite my best efforts to impart the correct pronunciation of the man’s name, my student’s monologue began “Hello! My name is Robber Smalls.”
