I have complex feelings about this book at this point. I want so badly to be excited for Rye and Frankie but I’m just not…

I keep thinking about how this book deals with various forms of grief. It’s done a great job thus far of showing the evils, how ethical concerns can become gray areas when faced with unspeakable horrors, and the loneliness that come in war. I appreciate that the author kept integrity at the forefront of Frankie’s mind. I’m not sure where things will go from here but I’m excited to find out.

I’m surprised to say this but I think I like this book better than The Nightengale so far. I’m entirely captivated—I don’t want to put it down when I’m reading it and think about how much I want to be reading it when I’m doing other things. I can’t tell if it’s good storytelling or just bc it’s something different than I’m used to reading (Vietnam vs. WWII) but it’s much better than I expected.
