I understand why Stephen king is talking up this short story and novella collection .I got an arc epub copy through NetGalley I think or edelweiss+ not sure will confirm later. Tbr’d it until recently because I need short stories to help keep me interested in some of the physical novel arc’s I get sent that don’t excite me as w much as I expected them to, yet feel committed to reading them until the end.

Does have some paranormal/supernatural stories in the collection but the most frightening are those that are based entirely in the real world

That shirt in the last update literally shocked me by then end because you as a reader are not explicitly told what will happen after the story ends but due to the way you are introduced to the characters and the way Nat reveals the actual full identity of one in the very last paragraph, you are shocked and horrified by the fact that you know exactly what will happen next regardless of the ambiguity of the ending.

This book is an excellent demonstration of Nat’s ability to write horror fiction that is entirely based in the everyday real world lived HUMAN experiences, while making them frightening for the reader because they are all plausible scenarios that can happen to you. But hopefully, you won’t ever actually experience them. Some like Meet-Cute #1: the unluckiest girl are nat’s imagining of historical events.

I’m kinda hooked
The story starts by taking a lot very average and normal human lived experiences founded in the real world and then twists them in the tiniest ways to play off our most common and basic fears and worst-case scenarios to start off the first few chapters. What is the worst thing that could possibly happen to you on a short road trip across the country to attend your grandmother’s funeral?
