I love it how the main character's mom is a parliamentarian elected by the British people, who feels, believes and acts as though the people she serves is everyone else (third world countries' populations, the global south, etc) except from the British people.

The main character's parents are a brilliant example of how two profoundly selfish people can be viewed differently depending on their gender: her mother's selfishness, disinterest in raising her daughter and self centeredness is widely praised, because she's working on herself and her studies and her political career. While her father is punished and mocked for being morally absent.
