The fish had stopped swimming against the current and the old man knew it would start circling soon. He decided to eat the other flying fish to regain some strength. The sun was rising for the third time when the fish started to circle. The old man felt faint and dizzy due to his fatigue. But he told himself to endure, then he saw the fish was thirty feet away from him.

The Old man woke with the jerk of his right fist coming up against his face and the line burning out through his right hand. Then he leaned back against the line and held it with his left hand, raising it to breaking point again and again to exhaust the fish. The line went out and out and was slowing down. The Old man was happy about it because it meant the fish was tired.

The old man moved to the stern, proceeding to gut the dolphin. There were two flying fish inside, and he laid them out at the bow. Next to the two pieces of dolphin fillets that were produced. He ate half of one of the fillets and one flying fish. After that, he decided to sleep at the bow while holding the line with his right hand, bracing it with his left hand.

Just before it was dark again, the old man's small line at the stern was taken by a dolphin. He pulled it in and lifted it over the stern. Theburnished gold fish pounded the bottom of the skiff with its long, flat body until the old man clubbed it across its golden head. That would be the old man's breakfast for tomorrow, although he knew it would taste terrible.

The Old man's left hand was uncramped. He reminisced that one time he played a hand game against the great negro for one day and a night. In the end, the old man won; it was revealed that his name was Santiago El Campeon. The people in the tavern called him champion, but he stopped the matches because it was bad for his right hand. And he needed it to fish.

The old man's left hand had crimped, and he was upset about it. The line slanted slowly upwards. The fish was coming up. It flew out of the sea, bright in the sun and fell back into it. It was two feet longer than the skiff. After witnessing the dark purple fish he is catching. He said his prayers and vowed that he would make a pilgrimage to Virgin de Cobre if he caught it.

While the fish kept tauting the old man and the boat, A warbler came around from the north and landed on the line. Seemed to be tried from its journey, it had a short rest on the skiff. The old man enjoyed its company until the fish lurched, forcing the warbler to leave. He felt the fish was swimming at a lesser depth as the sun rose. He ate the tuna to regain his strength.

He saw one of the green sticks dip sharply. He reached out for the line and held it softly. It was a marlin munching the bait fish. The old man waited patiently till it took the bait into its mouth. Then the old man struck hard, trying to pull it in. But he couldn't raise him an inch. And the skiff and him were dragged to North-west for the rest of the day and into the night.

A bird circled above the old man. There were bait fish flying out of the water, churning the current. The old man felt a taut from the line under his foot. He held the line firm as he felt the weight of a small tuna. Hauling it in, the old man swung him over the side, and an albacore landed on the stern. It weighed ten pounds and would be a good bait, the old man said.

As the old man far out on the ocean, he felt the morning coming. He had his baits out and was driting with the current. Four baits were down in the water at different fathoms. He used two albacores that the boy gave to him as baits. Also a big blue runner and a yellow jack that had been used before. But so far in the story, no fish took the bait.

After they finished their supper, the boy returned to his home, and the old man went to sleep on his newspapers over the springs on the bed. He woke up later, strolling to the boy's house to wake him up. They had coffee on the terrace before Manolin helped him to move the equipment he needed. The boy left for the other skiff, and he sailed off for the Great Well.
