The first chapter has been… uncomfortable. She talks about other black women from her youth in a way that says she still holds on to, to some degree, the belief that their darker skin, vernacular and body language is not just “urban black” but “too black”. I understand that black women are taught and internalize racism but something about her descriptions are too unflattering and pointed to not note.
