If people bring so much courage to this world, the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these, you can be sure it will kill you too, but there will be no special hurry.

“It is the body that is old. Sometimes I am afraid I will break off a finger as one breaks a stick of chalk. And the spirit is no older and not much wiser.”

“Don’t talk about the war,“ I said. The war was a long way away. Maybe there wasn’t any war. There was no war here. Then I realized it was over for me. “It doesn’t finish. There is no finish to a war.”
“Yes there is.”
Passini shook his head. “War is not won by victory. What if we take San Gabriele? What if we take the Carso and Monfalcone and Trieste? Where are we then? Did you see all the far mountains today? Do you think we could take all of them too? Only if the Austrians stop fighting. One side must stop fighting. Why don’t we stop fighting?”
