I am conflicted so far. It’s a very confused book. It’s very ideologically conservative, linking traditional family to happiness and human connection. It’s clearly anti-communist as well but also seems to be critiquing communism for being too consumerist??? I think it nails this latter part of the critique (in isolation) but at large it feels like an old boomer yelling about how things were better in his day.

Aaron Schuschu I mean, I don’t like people that actually like this book, but communism, in being scientific, is about material things, the original meaning of materialism, until pop culture debased the term.

Andrew I know what materialism means in Marx sense - it’s more about how conflict is determined by material. Communism is about the consumption of those things because it locates conflict in that desire for consumption.

Andrew Communism would essentially be opposed to consumption to this degree for this reason.
