I am conflicted so far. It’s a very confused book. It’s very ideologically conservative, linking traditional family to happiness and human connection. It’s clearly anti-communist as well but also seems to be critiquing communism for being too consumerist??? I think it nails this latter part of the critique (in isolation) but at large it feels like an old boomer yelling about how things were better in his day.

I mean, I don’t like people that actually like this book, but communism, in being scientific, is about material things, the original meaning of materialism, until pop culture debased the term.

I know what materialism means in Marx sense - it’s more about how conflict is determined by material. Communism is about the consumption of those things because it locates conflict in that desire for consumption.
