Once you get used to the author's writing style it's really not bad. The same lack of distinct voice is still there and there's this redundancy (for lack of a better word) where it's obvious the author has put a lot of though into technical details that aren't at all important to the actual narrative but he clearly wants the reader to understand that he's though about them.

It's pretty obvious that the author's special interest is engineering.
