Ch. 17 Ransom sees a red cloud on the horizon. Augray tells him that sandstorms kick up in the northern desert. Sometimes they descend on the handramit and choke the hnau. Fortunately, that one heads into the desert. Sometimes Ransom asks to be put down so that he could walk and stretch his numb legs. In the valley he sees a sapphire lake, 12 miles in diameter. In the center is a red island, rising from the water.

There are tall, yellow flowers that are the size of trees. The architecture and the grove of trees have a classical appearance. The sky is pale blue. This was, of course, Meldilorn. He hears falling water and smells a very light sweet fragrance. They come to a path leading into the purple forest and he sees a gong and a mallet made of greenish-blue metal. Augray strikes the gong.

The sorns see that they cannot rule themselves without Oyarsa and eldila. Moreover, only having one kind of hnau makes them limited in perspective. Engaging with an other gives the hnau on Malacandra more sympathy. Ransom is embarassed even though he knows what they say is true.

They visit a cave with books which are rare. The hrossa stopped making poetry books because it kills poetry. Ransom asks what happens if they forget but Augray tells him it is better to remember and Oyarsa always remembers and will remind them if necessary. Their host is a scientific sorn and they ask Ransom probing questions to learn about life on Thulcandra. Ransom realizes that humans are flawed in their eyes.

Long ago, creatures resembling birds lived there when the planet was warmer. They remind Ransom of pale rose cathedrals. The oyarsa did not prevent their extinction because races and even planets are not intended to live forever. Sorns lived solitary lives. They are like the hermits who lived in caves in the desert! He begins to see them like angels or titans with austere and august looks, hence, AUgray!

The pfiffletriggi make useful things that the sorn imagine from time to time. Ransom sits on his shoulder for the journey like Merry and Pippin. Once he gets used to it, he enjoys the ride. It makes him think of riding an elephant. They go about six to seven miles per hour. The rock here is a pale green color. Augray tells him that the pink clouds are like petrified trees in an abandond forest.

As friendly as sorns are, they creep him out just as the hross did at first. They are 18 feet tall. Their hands are shaped like fans with seven fingers. The skin is layered over bones like that of a bird. They felt cold adding to the creep factor. To distract himself, he asks who made the breathing apparatus that Augray gave him. It’s the pfiffltriggi who love making things of beauty..

Ch. 16 Ransom wakes up with a light heart but then remembers that his host is a friendly sorn but he is still afraid of meeting the Oyarsa. He asks for directions and Augray offers to carry him (like a CHILD -- more of the birth imagery). The sorn pokes fun at the hrossa for sending him on this path without realizing it could have killed him. Had he died they would have honored him with a fine poem.

Oh, I just read the apocryphal story (Daniel 14) of Daniel and the dragon. Both killed a dragon without sword or club. Daniel fed it cakes made of pitch, fat, and hair. Ransom and Hyoi “fed” the hnakra with spears.

It causes him to shed his earthbound identity. He learns the language, literature, food, and drink of the hross. He accepts their ways for his ways and feels part of their community. He joins their hunt and is baptized when thrown in the water and kills the hnakra and feels grown up (going back to the birth analogy). After the unthinkable in Ch. 13 (fortuna minor), he repents and seeks Oyarsa.

We studied identity and Daniel and the pastor summarized it as: taken, charged to assimliate, challenge of authority. Ransom was taken and he was forced to remove his clothes. He spends a certain amount of time in the womb and experience revitalized spiritual being. He had to put on winter clothes to survive their temperatures. He ran away from humanity so he’s rejecting what Weston and Devine force him to do.
