i really don’t like the way magic is presented in these books (as painful and scary and deeply evil) or how stupid Connie comes across.

you’re looking in all these records for mention of a book, and someone’s journal mentions “mother’s almanack” and you skim past it????? and need two other people’s input to realise it’s the book you’re looking for?????

i read the second book in this series first, bc i didn’t realise it was meant to be second until i’d already started, and thought it was kinda mid but fun.

if i’d started with this one, idk that i would have continued. Howe improved as a writer *enormously* by book #2
