We had an old record player assembled from spare parts, whose only party trick was that its needle would automatically go back and play the same record from the start unless we changed it. We were so busy, and so bombed, that we didn’t change it to for days on end. In the final run-up to my thesis submission, the Rolling Stones’ album Gimme Shelter played over and over for days.
