I've only read the first essay, Against Interpretation, but I'm loving this so far. Short, easy to read and understand, and supremely interesting; I'm excited to discover more of her work. I disagree entirely with her glorification of art (wherein she claims art matters so much that we ought to avoid interpreting it so as not to weaken its effect), but I concede that if art can be said to have value, it's emotional.

Thinking about it, though, I realise it feels somewhat weak of me to like this, as Sontag is for all intents and purposes validating my way of looking at things – she justifies my tendency to react emotionally to things, and appreciates my inability to share interesting insights or make thoughtful points about whatever media I engage with. With that thought, liking her idea feels like cheating, and like I'm just granting myself the right to keep being un-intellectual about 'art' and everything else, like I'm justifying not working to improve my critical thinking and analysis skills. That's not a pass I want to give myself – so what to do?
