The second quarter zooms out to show the bigger picture of slavery, contrasting openly cruel slaveholders with those who see themselves as kind and moral. It keeps coming back to the uncertainty enslaved people live with, suggesting that even “good” individuals are still part of a system that makes nearly everyone complicit.

Also, a hint of what’s to come has appeared, and I’m not ready to face it 😭.
