Why do I get the feeling like the author wants me to to feel sorry for these characters, why just seem utterly selfish because they want to help to feel apart of something, not necessarily because they care about what they’re helping with

Never felt so uninspired or uninterested in a book

Still, what is this book about, what is it trying to tell us??
