Beautiful scenes of a decades long wait for a family reunion in Uganda. Aunts from Rwanda (surviving the 1994 genocide) and USA (not home for 30 years), drinking banana wine laced with honey! This memoir is so well written.

The character descriptions in this book are out of this world. The way he describes how people talk and their gestures. This book gets better and better.

As well as the memoir and seeing a world unfamiliar to me, the writing is excellent and often could be mistaken for a novel. Today’s favourite quote: “If crystal were water made solid, her voice would be the last splash of water before it set.” [about his mother]. What a great description, how does someone come up with this?
