I’m currently around page 160 of The Shadow Girls, and the story is becoming more powerful as it unfolds. What began as curiosity about three immigrant girls slowly turns into a deeper reflection on migration, identity, and belonging in Sweden. Mankell writes with empathy, reminding the reader that behind every statistic about immigration there are human stories shaped by loss, hope, and resilience.

By page 211, the narrative becomes almost dreamlike. The intertwined stories of the girls and the poet create a strange atmosphere of disbelief, as if the narrator himself struggles to fully grasp the reality of what he is hearing. At times it feels as though he is dreaming the events rather than witnessing them, which makes the reader question where memory ends and imagination begins.
