I wonder if Grace Metalious knew the Trumps? 45 is so much like Rodney, and Leslie seems a lot like Fred.

I hate to admit it, but this is absolutely riveting. I normally dislike misery porn, but this has captured me in the same way that V.C. Andrews did when I was a teen. I don’t think I care to read the sequel, though. Enough is enough.

I always think I‘ve adjusted to what it’s like to read historical fiction and then I read it and remember how distasteful so many attitudes were. Sometimes even stuff from the 80s and 90s, but almost always stuff from 50s America.

Class of 1937! Gosh, I thought this was the 1950s. That changes a lot of things. I was wondering why people were so conservative and judgey, and why they still had outhouses and didn’t get paid much, but I figured it was just life in a small town.

This is so pulpy, and yet, rather compelling.
