it's very pulpy & can be a bit of a shock when coming to it from more modern fantasy series--the narration style is super different from what's gotten common since this was published in the 70s. I enjoyed it though, & it didn't take that long to get into the flow of things/get accustomed to the writing style (it's not hard, just different. Like, objective about what's going on in Elric's head but not at all objective about how cool he is).
Also, I have to say that it's most interesting coming to it FROM that modern fantasy place because you're really just looking at the Brooding White-Haired Twink Anti-Hero common ancestor & picking up the pieces of what all these other fantasy authors have taken form Elric to sprinkle into their own works. Rhaegar? that's an Elric
Daemon? that's an Elric
Geralt of Rivia? that's a beefy Elric
Fenris Dragon Age? you guessed it, that's an Elric!

Super short read, I listened to the audiobook & it was only 5 hours--but there's a whole saga of, like, 6 main books. This first one definitely isn't too much of a time sink if you want to just test out if you like Foundational Dark Fantasy Story(tm), & if your library doesn't have it then you can probably find it pretty cheap on thriftbooks. Worth giving it a go I think, I had fun & will be looking into the rest of the series!
