Hardy on vacation from his dour outlook on life. Fancy Day,educated school teacher, returns to her father's village to look after him. She turns the head of the Pastor (also educated, so suited), the richest man in town who is also kind, and Dick Dewey, a carrier who is the most attractive but the least suited. Dad gets his foot caught in trap; DD rescues him; Dad tells Fancy it was the rich guy, hoping for marriage

I miss the gloomy Hardy. This one is lightly likable. Will Fancy marry Dick? Yes, she most certainly will—and it can’t happen soon enough!

Early Hardy--charming in a way reminiscent of The Vicar of Wakefield. No gloomy Hardy at all -- rather a disappointment! Fancy is loved by two men--clergy and common. Subplot involves the move from a choir to an organ in the church. Is our clergyman doing this only because Fancy would play the organ? Nice simile, so long as you're fance. At the ball, Fancy is "like a flower in a vegetable patch,"
