I am having trouble feeling this particular character’s “loss”. I’m supposed to feel like she was just on the cusp of her big break, before it was all ripped away. Except for me it’s dreadful to begin with.

This clean-cut, silver spoon guy she’s hoping to marry is repulsive. A totally inconsiderate asshole. And the job she was about to start is abhorrent. Ick. A priority shift will be an improvement.
