So did a lot of us, but bear in mind many people give it names that aren't indicative of what they really are, like mine.

Ah, lovely. I don't think I'd have enough to fill such a shelf myself, but it's still a rare and welcome step in the right direction. I'll be adding my own crossed fingers for half-stars next.

Those who rarely or never DNF mightn't even notice or use it, I suppose, but for the book hoarders and those of us that sample-read and drop books all the time, this is a godsend. :)

Agreed. I put it on my to do list for this weekend.

They moved everything on my "abandoned" shelf to it without any input from me which I've got very mixed feelings about. Yay, I didn't have to do anything, but hmm, have you maybe considered communicating with your userbase?

They sent out an email message a few weeks ago, but it looks like many people never received it. Here's what it said:

Hi Caroline,

Psst... The Did Not Finish (DNF) shelf is coming soon. You're hearing about it first because you already track books you started and set aside.

Things to Know

-If you created an exclusive custom shelf named exactly "did not finish," "dnf," "abandoned," "unfinished," "didn-t-finish," or "dropped", we'll automatically convert it to the new default Did Not Finish shelf. Your reviews, ratings, and reading history stay with your book.
-If you created a tag or non-exclusive custom shelf, it will remain unchanged with one exception. Those currently named exactly "did-not-finish" will be automatically renamed to "did-not-finish-2" to avoid duplication.
-If you prefer to keep your current setup, rename your shelf or tag to anything else before Feb. 28.


What to Expect
As we prepare for launch, your existing shelf or tag may show a different name or appear non-editable. This is expected as we work behind the scenes to ensure your books, ratings, and reviews transfer smoothly. Don't worry! You can still add and remove books from your shelf as usual during this time.

I changed my DNF shelf name to "did not complete" because I'm suspicious of the change and didn't want their automatic conversion. Unfortunately, they still added the DNF shelf; it's just that nothing's on it, only on my "did not complete" shelf. So things look stupid now.

Hey, at least it’s something positive for once! I’m excited to move everything over when I get the chance! 😄

I wonder if the intolerant crowd will have their work made easier now that everyone has a DNF shelf. You know how some are, taking offence at abandoning a book they love...

I wonder if you'll end up putting some DNFs back on your TBR because you can't recall why you dropped that book anymore. I know I will, mostly because I don't review DNFs (too time consuming) and very few of them have anything indicating why I abandoned.

You can always put books that you DNF from now on, I suppose.

For me it's far more useful because my DNF shelf doesn't automatically indicated I dropped a book as opposed as when I simply sample-read and decided against reading a book.

Let us hope they're starting a new trend by doing smth actually good 😂

I still say them adding it at this point, is moot.. We've had the ability to create our own DNF shelf for years.. I'm using the one I created right now. Have been for years.. We didn't need a default DNF shelf if the site already gives us the ability to create a functioning one.. If we were unable to do this, then I would celebrate the fact that they finally added one. I would have been overjoyed if they finally gave us half star rating systems instead, AND my DMs back.

I agree for the most part, but I do think it's not a complete waste. The users naming their DNF shelves as they pleased wasn't ideal, for one, and it also helps with separating "read" books from DNFs because there were still people marking DNFs as fully read and rating DNFs like completed reads.

This I do not understand.. GR gives you the ability to write a non-rated review, if you didn't finish the book. You can bypass the stars and just begin writing your DNF review and then post it..

I know a lot of people probably do not know how to create their own DNF shelves either, and this is probably why many will put them on their "Read" shelves instead even though they didn't finish the book.

I also personally don't agree with rating a book I could not finish, no matter how far I got in the book. If I didn't finish it then I won't star rate it, but I will write why I could not complete the book. Though I feel the fact that I couldn't finish it, says it all and that is rating enough.. I shelve it on my DNF shelf...

I kinda like the freedom that we can name our DNF shelves or any shelf we create, what we want. For instance, my DNF is currently labeled M.D.K. (Murder. Death. Kill.) 😂

Yeah, I don't personally agree with rating a DNF either, but I don't judge those that do.

Mine has changed names thrice since I've been here, I no longer remember the original name I gave my DNF shelf. 😂 I settled on 'sampled and declined' once I realised I had too many Kindle samples mixed in with my regular DNFs, and since I tend to DNF at approximately the % where Kindle samples cut off, it suited me fine.

Marquise I don’t rate a DNF if I quit because it just wasn’t working for me, but I do feel justified rating it if I quit because the book was so awful I couldn’t stand reading another page. There are a few of those that qualify but I think it’s a legit reason for a low rating. I mean, I could skim read the rest to say technically I read the whole thing but if I’m doing that it’s not much different than just saying enough is enough and nothing will save the book at at this point.

DNF shelf is nice as goodreads UI is unintuitive and many people don't realize you can make Exclusive Shelves, however it seems pointless if the site doesn't allow you to mark at point of DNF, as the pages for DNFs are still counted fully, as far as I can see

It's a small thing. But it is a gesture of good faith. It is appreciated. Let's hope they continue the trend.

It's fine, I don't judge either way so I'm not asking for justifications. :) I myself simply don't rate DNFs regardless of whether I dropped the book due to taste or content, and that's me.

Yeah, the ability to add percentage/page like in the reading progress updates would've been neat and vastly useful. Oh, well, I guess it's up to us to add one line or two explaining where we left it...

I use to be this way, years ago but I could no longer do it.. My time is limited and precious.. Plus, I read for escapism & entertainment as well as being a character driven mood reader.. I just can't suffer through reading/finishing a book if I am truly not enjoying it. It ruins my whole reading experience. So 98% of the time if it is not working for me, then I DNF it and move on to a better read.

I can't give you much advice on how to DNF when you're not in the habit, because I was in your shoes once: chronically unable to abandon a book even if I was hating it with all my little heart. Then one day "Outlander" came along, and I finally DNFed my first-ever book.

Self-preservation kicked in, I suppose. :P

I didn't have a DNF shelf on GR, I do have a list of DNF/dropped series on my personal notes however.
Does that mean we'll get half stars next? 🤣

I'm less enthusiastic about the DNF shelf now that I've had my first incident with it. :D I knew there would be someone with zero idea of how this site works who would come to offer their wise perspective on a DNFed shelf, but I didn't think it would be so soon or so dramatic...

So consider my enthusiasm gone. It's still useful, but no big deal. It'll help make DNFs even more visible for those who care to stalk and troll.
