I haven't even made it into the story proper yet; am still on the Chronology of author's life that Everyman's Library editions have, and I'm already amused. From the year 1952, when Philip Pullman was 6 years old:
"Learned to read. Travelled by sea and rail to Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), where father was posted. Caught exchanging certain forbidden information with little girl. Punished. Learned to smoke." 😂
