I just finished the prologue and already feel this heavy weight in my chest. The abuse and neglect alone were hard to sit with, and then it’s immediately implied that Jack heard his mother being murdered—felt her blood drip onto his arm while he hid under the bed, staying perfectly still so he wouldn’t wake his little sister in his arms. And he’s just a child himself. Heavy right from the start. Holy shit.
