Here the triumph of laissez-faire revisionism is plainly manifest: to depend on the state is an insidious and degrading form of dependence; on the other hand, to depend on a corporate employer for one's livelihood (and one's health care, family leave, and leisure time) is fully compatible with being a proud and self-reliant earner.
