The Trees starts the reader in one direction then at some point takes a turn and lands us is the deep end of some surreal and gory waters. It was creative, at times hilarious, and certainly memorable, but the second half felt like a pileup slowing one’s flow to the end of the book. I appreciated the accurate mockery of the stupidest president imaginable, and the drawing of attention to our “slow genocide.”
