so far: awful. Full of high-blown Victorian gobbledygook language you just can't follow, so you have no real clue what's happening or being described. I'm not alone there, many reviews say the 2nd half of the anthology is much better. Let's hope.

The other reviewers are correct! Once you hit 1911, the stories improve dramatically. The title story "The Night Wire" (1926) is superb.
I'd guess, this editor was more interested in showing the development of technology through fiction than with quality of story.

oh, when I read the blurb for this one the movie "Ring" (which I have not seen nor do wish to) immediately came to mind, so I moved on down the list of 47 volumes of British Library Tales of the Weird. Here's hoping stories in the second half deliver something better 🧚♀️🙋🏼.

One of the ideas that really scares me is haunted technology. Typewriters writing by themselves, radios switching themselves on and off. That's why I was interested in this one. I'm at 1911 now and the English is starting to become recognisable as English, so perhaps it won't be a DNF.
