The average length of a sentence feels like 5 words. Repetition, repetition, repetition. Language sounding like continuous fire. Listening to it as an audiobook makes this even more intense. And exhausting. One character blends into the next. All are hard-boiled or victims about to die. One minute killing Vietnamese for drugs, the next setting barracks in Cuba on fire, behind the scenes with Hoover followed by Vegas.

Audiobook. In 12 hours and I lost interest in details. Evil for the sake of evil. American history is one conspiracy according to Ellroy. It starts in the aftermath of the JFK assassination. Again, three main baddies killing their way behind the scenes. So far, it's mostly about organized crime conning Hughes into buying out Vegas. Trafficking heroine from Vietnam is next on the agenda. More assassinations to follow.
