I feel VERY WEIRD about Simmons's characterization of teen Mike's behavior toward his mother as abuse. It's not that I think teens can't abuse their parents, but this is a teenager we KNOW is being horrifically abused, I don't think it's quite fair to treat this behavior as "Oh poor mom." Mom viewing it this way makes sense! Simmons viewing this way feels gender-essentialist in a way I hate.
