they're not call signs . . . they're nicknames—plain and simple. Call signs are for missions.

Of course, when someone doesn't like their nickname, it pretty much becomes permanent.

When I ask you a question, I expect an answer worthy of your intelligence. 'It wasn't anything important' was not an intelligent answer. If I wanted you to give me a non-answer, I wouldn't have bothered to ask the question in the first place.

John had wanted to follow Ian into the Navy. Since he couldn't, I guess I thought I should go in his place. Whatever the reason, it was the best decision I ever made, and I've never regretted it. The Navy gave me a purpose and a way to control the guilt I felt.
