I just love Frank's writing voice. He's the bookseller. The tone is genteel yet warm. Helene is more emotional on the page, sometimes alarmingly so! There are other people whose letters are included as well but they feel like an interruption as these two are my favourites...

she calls her place "a one-room hovel in a broken down brownstone" but then i realised excitedly; it's a true story! you can look it up!
anyhow i keyed the address into google maps streetview - it looks quite grand and is a block from central park which shocked me, perhaps it's been gentrified though. i must find out more about what else she's written

oh, i LOVE this!!!! i found this after reading an interview with the author who wrote the correspondent (which I also loved!). previously i wrote the replies to ask-a-librarian queries and this reminds me so much of that, except... more elegant and sophisticated, from a different time. the similarities between the two books are quite clear
