I'm enjoying Benny's determination and spunk. 🙂

Don’t get attached she reminded herself, even as she looked to Wally, someone she had a feeling she could trust. And trust was something she didn’t do easily.

The last sentence really resonates with me. 😔 I think that's a bit sad but whatever.

Wally seems like an awesome character and a good egg. He encouraged Benny and that was kind of him. 🙂❤

'But I choose to believe in the original lady of this house. She was convinced the island existed. And sometimes, when you believe hard enough, it becomes your reality.'

That's an interesting perspective. This is great dialogue from Wally.

Everything fantastical I’ve written in this journal actually happened. And everything that happened is my fault. But all is not lost.

This passage is intriguing, especially Evelyn writing that a situation was all her fault. That's worded pretty intensely and bluntly. I appreciate that she told Benny that she had faith in her in the letter. 😊

Not to mention that Jacqueline Woodson explained that that actually happened in a Brooklyn neighborhood in the 1980s.

Anyway, back to this book! I can relate to Benny's close relationship with her single mother.

When Sal told Benny that he was tempted to flood the restaurant to collect the insurance money, I was reminded of Remember Us by Jacqueline Woodson. That's because there were people starting fires in a neighborhood to collect insurance money in that book. 😵‍💫😮
