Because the loss is confusing, people are baffled and immobilized. They don’t know how to make sense of the situation. They can’t problem-solve because they do not yet know whether the problem (the loss) is final or temporary.

I met a man who was not there.
He was not there again today.
Oh, how I wish he’d go away.”

Here we see the absurdity of not being certain about a person’s absence or presence. People hunger for certainty. Even sure knowledge of death is more welcome than a continuation of doubt.
