Just finished the eponymous short story - I enjoyed learning about Liusu and Liyuan's love story although I wished we could have seen more development of their relationship amidst the war. Also wtf Liusu just made Ah Li and her child stay in the house???

I'm on the eponymous short story and I think this is the most riveting story so far. I'm invested in Liusu and Liuiyuan's relationship!

"Jasmine Tea" was a disturbing tale, to me. So far the themes of "love" in this book are of the transactional kind. I found this one more compelling than "Aloeswood Incense" but still felt unsatisfied at the end.

Just finished "Aloeswood Incense" and I'm not sure what to make of it so far. I can't relate to the motivations of any of the characters (probably because the societal expectations have changed significantly since this story's publication) but I also don't feel emotionally connected to them. I felt that a lot of detail was missing from the novella, but I look forward to reading the rest.
